Her biography, The White Blackbird, A Life of the Painter Margarett Sargent by Her Granddaughter, was a New York Times Notable Book in 1996. Her second collection of poems, Darling, appeared in 2001, and her first, Memoir, published in 1989, remains in print. Mourning Pictures, a play based on her mother's death, was produced on Broadway in 1974 and published in The New Women's Theatre: Ten Plays by Contemporary American Women. She has received awards in poetry from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Connecticut Commission on the Arts and in playwriting from the New York State Council on the Arts. Her work has appeared in the New Yorker, New York Times, The Nation, New Republic, Paris Review, Seneca Review, Open City, Conjunctions, and other journals and anthologies. She was 1997 Visiting Distinguished Writer in Creative Non-Fiction at the University of Iowa; she has lectured at the Bennington College and the Columbia University MFA programs, and in 2000, was Visiting Poet at Wesleyan University
