Institutional Information

The New School supports a wide range of facilities and services for students matriculated in the undergraduate and graduate degree programs of its eight schools. As an urban university in the nation's largest and arguably most sophisticated and culturally diverse city, and with a long association with that city's intellectual and cultural avant-garde, The New School and its students are enriched by and enrich the vibrant intellectual life of New York. A wide variety of officially recognized student organizations exists at the University--academic, cultural, and recreational. For more information about student organizations go to www.newschool.edu/studentaffairs/st_develop_recorgs.html.

Most student services and facilities are covered by the University Services Fee collected each term at registration, including registration, photo ID, library and computing facilities, transcripts of record, free admission to many intellectual and cultural events, and graduation. A small Student Activities Fee supports resources and activities in specific degree programs. For complete and current information about New School resources and services for students go to Student Affairs www.newschool.edu/cover/studentaf/studentaf4e.html or select a specific link below. For information about resources and activities specific to your degree program at The New School, visit the web pages of the department or visit the offices.

Student ID Card

A New School photo ID card is required for access to most University facilities and services, including libraries and technology centers. The schedule for ID photos is posted by the Cashier's office on the main floor at 65 Fifth Avenue. New students must present proof of registration and payment of the University Services Fee to obtain an ID. The ID must be validated every semester after completion of registration.

Libraries

The university operates three libraries, which are open to all students in its schools, although each collection is devoted to specific subjects: The Raymond Fogelman Library is weighted toward the social sciences and philosophy. Its extensive reserve collection is utilized by the entire University. The Harry Scherman Library serves Mannes College of Music and specializes in European and American classical music. The Adam and Sophie Gimbel Design Library serves Parsons School of Design.

Research Library Association of South Manhattan: All students matriculated in undergraduate or graduate degree programs also have access to facilities of the Research Library Association of South Manhattan. This consortium includes facilities of The New School, New York University, and The Cooper Union. It is one of the largest inter-university library consortiums in the country. NYU's Elmer Holmes Bobst Library alone houses more than three million volumes. This arrangement offers a vast range of resources to supplement the specialized New School libraries. Connecting the consortium libraries is BobCat, a user-friendly online catalog. Most holdings of the aforementioned libraries are listed in BobCat, which can be accessed over the Internet or by direct dial-in. All the libraries provide information resource training and orientations for students, normally at the beginning of every semester. Beyond the consortium are the rich resources of New York City, including 250 Metro member libraries and the public library system of the five New York boroughs.
