http://www.generalstudies.newschool.edu/ba/ Isabelle Frank, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs, franki@newschool.edu Since 1944, The New School has offered the bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts in a program intended specifically for adult students. Indeed, it was the first college in New York City to enable students to finish their degrees through part- or full-time study in the day or evening. Unlike most degree programs, in which students are required to complete specific courses in a certain order, New School students work closely with an academic advisor to clarify their educational objectives, assess intellectual strengths and weaknesses, evaluate past academic accomplishments, and then draw on the New School curriculum (the credit courses listed in the New School Catalog and on this website) to design a program of study reflecting their individual needs and goals. Some students choose to pursue a single area of study in depth, some design a program that allows them to cover a broad range of courses in the liberal arts, some supplement their liberal arts courses with a career-related certificate curriculum, and some begin graduate work through the University's accelerated Bachelor's/Master's options. The New School Online University, through which students take courses In addition to the comprehensive array of courses offered for credit in the New School Catalog, on campus and on line, qualified bachelor's students may take introductory-level courses offered by the graduate programs of the university, including the New School for Social Research and the New School Media Studies Program. Some students also take courses offered in the continuing education programs of Parsons The New School for Design and Mannes College The New School for Music. They have access to a multitude of intellectual and cultural activities that take place at The New School every semester--concerts, poetry readings, art shows, photography exhibits, film screenings, and special lectures and programs featuring prominent figures in every field. Admission: Applicants should have completed 30 semester credits of course work at another accredited college or as a general credit student at The New School. Applicants who have not yet completed 30 credits but who are at least twenty-four years old and can demonstrate their ability to do advanced college-level work may petition for admission. New bachelor's students are admitted in fall, spring, and summer academic terms. Official policies relating to the bachelor's and other undergraduate degrees of The New School are published in the New School Catalog. This statement covers admission procedures, fees and expenses, opportunities for financial aid, academic policies and regulations, and student life.
